A Look
The Commonwealth Games have gone through multiple name changes in the last 80 years, but the current name was officially established in 1978. In the last 20 years, new Sports have been added and the number of countries and athletes has been on the rise. In the Beginning

The Rev. Astly Cooper of England first mentioned the idea of the Commonwealth Games in the magazine “Greater Britain” in July of 1891 and then again in another magazine article in October 1891. Cooper suggested that a “Pan-Britannic-Pan Anglican Contest and Festival” occur every four years “as a means of increasing the goodwill and good understanding of the Empire.” It wasn’t until the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam that the first stages of the British Empire Games began to evolve.
Commonwealth Games Born

The first Commonwealth Games took place in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada, after Canadian athlete Bobby Robinson called a meeting of representatives of all Empire countries and proposed that the British Empire Games begin. At the first Commonwealth Games, 11 countries sent 400 athletes to compete in six sports and 59 events. Robinson was able to get the City of Hamilton to provide $30,000 in travel expenses for the participating nations.
Name Changes

Since its birth in 1930, the competition has taken place every four years, except for in 1942 and 1946 when World War II was in full swing. From 1930 to 1950, the event was called the British Empire Games. From 1954 to 1966 it was titled the British Empire and Commonwealth Games and from 1970 to 1974 it was the British Commonwealth Games. It became the Commonwealth Games in 1978. It is also sometimes referred to as the Friendly Games.
Team Sports Added

From 1930 until the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, there were only individual-competition sports. In the 1998 events in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, team sports such as cricket, hockey, netball and rugby were played. Basketball was introduced in Melbourne, Australia in 2006.
EAD Sports and Statistical Study of the Games

The 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, featured sports for elite athletes with a disability (EAD). The EAD continued in 2006 in Melbourne and featured other sports such as swimming, table tennis and powerlifting. That year, 4,049 athletes attended. The 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, is expected to feature 71 countries and 17 different sports.

WHAT ARE COMMON WEALTH GAMES
The Commonwealth Games has a long history at its back as it evolved gradually passing across a humpy bumpy track.
The initial concept of the “Commonwealth Games” can be credited to the Rev. Astly Cooper of England, who suggested a “Pan-Britannic-Pan Anglican Contest and Festival … every four years as a means of increasing the goodwill and good understanding of the Empire” in 1891 in some magazines like “Greater Britain” and “The Times”
The “Inter-Empire Championships” which took place in 1911 as part of the “Festival of Empire” held in London to mark the coronation of King George V could be seen as an initial attempt only.
It was not until the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam that the first practical steps were taken to organise the British Empire Games. It was Mr. M. M. (Bobby) Robinson of Canada made the proposal of a British Empire Games, which was started in Hamilton, Canada. 11 countries sent their 400 athletes to take part in 6 sports and 59 events in this game.
Since then, the Games have been conducted every four years (except for 1942 and 1946 due to World War II) and the event has seen many changes. From 1930 to 1950, the Games were known as the British Empire Games, from 1954 until 1966 the British Empire and Commonwealth Games and from 1970 to 1974, they took on the title of British Commonwealth Games. It was the 1978 Games in Edmonton that saw this multi-sports event change its name to the Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games from 1930 to 1994 include only single competition sports. The 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur saw the introduction of team sports like cricket, hockey, netball, and rugby 7’s. The 2002 Manchester Games also saw for the first time, a limited number of full medal events for elite athletes with a disability (EAD) in a fully inclusive sports programme.
The British Empire Games Association of Canada presented the first ceremonial flag of the Commonwealth Games after the first Games in Hamilton in 1930. Recently in 2001, CGF has adopted a new set of Official Flag and Seal considering the increased number member countries.
In the year 2000, the CGF took on the added responsibility of the Commonwealth Youth Games, open to athletes 18 years of age and under the Youth Games provide an excellent opportunity for aspiring young athletes from the Commonwealth Nations.
With the passing of time and places, number of athletes, sports and participating nations has increased.
BRIEF OF COMMONWEALTH GAMES
After Olympics, Commonwealth Games is the second largest sports festival in the world. The Games are held once in four years but only in between the Olympic years. The Games were originally known as the British Empire Games. The first Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 at Hamilton, Canada. The 10th Commonwealth Games were held at Christchurch, New Zealand in 1974, the 11th in Edmonton (Canada) in 1978, the 12th in Brisbane (Australia) in 1982, the 13th in Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1986, the 14th in Auckland (New Zealand) in 1990 and the 15th in Victoria (Canada) in 1994, where about 3,350 athletes from a record 64 nations (including South Africa, which joined the family of Commonwealth athletes after 36 years) participated. Namibia also, which gained its independence in 1990, made its debut while Hong Kong made its final appearance in the Games before being ceded to China in 1997.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to.
